When a person gets behind the wheel after drinking, they are risking not only his or her own life, but the lives of everyone else the driver shares the road with, including passengers in the driver's own vehicle. The person's ability to accurately judge surroundings and respond to emergencies is drastically reduced.
Louisiana State Police suspect that alcohol was a factor in an accident that injured four people late on an October Monday afternoon. The suspected drunk driving accident occurred on October 10, 2011 in West Baton Rouge.
According to the State Police, a 30-year-old female took her pickup truck onto Bueche Road. She was heading in the southbound direction of the roadway when she swerved into the opposing lane and hit a second truck head on.
The female driver was carrying two younger children, ages seven and eight, in her pickup. Both children and drivers were injured in the accident and taken to the nearest local hospital by emergency medical personnel. The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time.
Authorities reported that the investigation remains ongoing but that the female driver has been charged with second offense DWI, three counts of vehicular negligent injuring for the two passengers and second driver's injuries and careless operation. State officers also reported that drugs may have played a part in causing the serious motor vehicle accident but have not confirmed which drugs were suspected. The police did not charge the driver of the second truck.
Drug driving is considered some of the most negligent type of vehicle behavior. The original decision to consume the alcoholic beverages and following risk is a voluntary one even if they did not consciously intend to hurt anyone in an accident.
